Building custom kitchen cabinets comes down to mastering the standard carcass (the box) and deciding between two main styles: Frameless (European) or Face-Framed.
If you are looking for maximum storage efficiency and clean modern lines, frameless is the way to go. If you want traditional strength and a classic look, building a face frame is the standard approach.
1. Standard Industry Dimensions
Stick to standard sizing so that appliances, countertops, and stock hardware fit seamlessly.
Base Cabinets: 34.5″ high (reaches 36″ with a 1.5″ countertop) and 24″ deep.
Toe Kick: 4″ high and 3″ deep.
Upper Cabinets: 12″ to 14″ deep. Height varies (30″, 36″, or 42″) based on ceiling height. Mount them 18″ above the countertop.
2. Material Selection
Carcass (Box): 3/4″ pre-finished maple plywood is the industry gold standard. It saves you from having to finish the cabinet interiors later. Avoid MDF for base carcasses due to potential water exposure.
Face Frames & Door Stiles/Rails: 3/4″ solid hardwood (such as maple, oak, or cherry, depending on whether you are painting or staining).
Cabinet Backs: 1/4″ plywood if you use a 3/4″ hanging rail, or a solid 1/2″ to 3/4″ plywood back for maximum rigidity.
